On a mission to support moms and babies

Novocuff, Inc. is a medical device company dedicated to improving outcomes for pregnancies affected by preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) or cervical shortening.

Why this work is important

Preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) is a pregnancy complication where the amniotic sac breaks and leaks before 37 weeks of pregnancy and prior to the onset of labor. PPROM always results in preterm birth. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), PPROM complicates approximately 2-3% of all pregnancies in the United States and represents a significant proportion of preterm births (1).

Cervical shortening refers to a change that can occur during pregnancy, often in the second or third trimester, in which the cervix becomes shorter than expected. Cervical shortening may lead to cervical insufficiency. Cervical insufficiency is diagnosed when the cervix is severely shortened and cannot remain closed enough to support a full-term pregnancy (2). Both cervical insufficiency and cervical shortening are associated with an increased risk of complications such as pregnancy loss or spontaneous preterm birth (3).

Preterm birth is the leading cause of death for infants under the age of one. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), preterm birth complications were responsible for approximately 1 million deaths in 2020 (4).

The Novocuff Cervical Control System is an investigational device intended to improve outcomes for these conditions. Learn more about our Novocuff mission and research activities here.
